New Soccer Pubs in Town – The Astoria and The Cooler!
Due in part to the success of our 600+ member club, 2 more pubs in Eugene have decided to show the beautiful game.
We will try watching some of the early morning weekend games at The Cooler Sports Bar, located at 20 Centennial Loop in Eugene (Basically near the NE Intersection of Coburg and MLK Blvd.), as they open at 6am every day (minors may enter 6am-4pm) and they have both Setanta and FSC channels.  http://www.thecoolerbar.com
Also available is The Astoria Pub, but as of today they only have FSC and you must be 21 at all times, located at 2406 W 11th Ave.  Tel: 541 465-2277  It’s right across the parking lot from Direct Kick, the best soccer gear and international fan apparel store in the STATE.  Most Soccer is Real Futbol club activities will still take place at Taylor’s Bar & Grill, but these pubs also show soccer and we may be viewing some weekend games there when American football conflicts at Taylors.

Taylor’s Bar Information 894 E 13th Ave., Eugene:
** Under-21’s are OK until 4pm.  Game times are subject to change, especially for delayed showings, so check the channel websites for updates/changes.  Taylor’s will be open as early as 7am on some weekends, so we’ll be able to see more live games then.  Keep in mind that there are replays of most of these matches and a LOT of additional matches not listed above, so if you miss the live showing with the club or want to see something else, just check out channel websites to find the game times and stop by Taylor’s and just ask them to turn it on.  In order to watch games at Taylor’s you must purchase at least 1 drink (a Coke costs less than $2). This may seem obvious to most of you, but our arrangement with Taylor’s is this: Taylor’s purchases 6 soccer channels, which cost them hundreds of dollars a month in exchange for some added business.  The only alternative is to charge a flat fee at the door, which we want to avoid.  Thank you for your understanding.

OUTDOOR Pick-Up Games (Open to All):
We are going to join in on some pick-up games on the turf fields next to the Student Recreation Center (on 17th St. off Agate St. on campus).  These are just drop-in times so it is NOT an organized game, but should still be pretty fun.  ANYONE is welcome (you do NOT have to be a student) and it is free!  There are other times available, but these are the times we’re going to try to be there:
Mondays:  5:30-7pm

Soccer Equipment and Team Jerseys:
The best stores in Eugene to get equipment or supporters kit is Direct Kick Soccer Shop, located at 2392 W 11th Ave. or online at www.directkickonline.com  They have a GREAT selection of international soccer team apparel such as jerseys ($30), flags ($15), etc.!  You can also buy team gear from your club’s website so they’ll get your money to spend on better players, but if you are cheap like me, www.ebay.com  works just fine as I’ve had great luck buying around 30 jerseys from ebay, even with foreign sellers. But as I said, Direct Kick Soccer Shop right here in Eugene has an awesome selection of international kit for really great prices too!

Referee Jobs/Opportunities:
Would you like to join the dark side, earn money, and learn the game better?  Become a referee!  It is fun and there is a shortage of refs all over Oregon.  To learn how to become a referee, check out these websites:

Looking for Club Leaders and U of O Student ID Numbers:
Do you want to be an officer/organizer in the club?  As we are over 600 members, the club has become too big to manage with just a couple people, so we are looking for some help!  We would like to find people interested in organizing actual playing opportunities for the club (pick-up games, leagues, etc.), someone to be the club’s liaison to the U of O women’s team/fan club, help on the new website, a publicity/outreach person, or whatever else you can think of!  If interested, please send an email just to me.

EURO 2008 Challenge - Final Results
The verdict is in: Spain rules Europe, and Elijah rules Eugene's soccer community!!
Our club founder Jim earned a respectable second place in the EURO Challenge, but Elijah successfully defended his lead from the group stage.
Elijah and Jim were the ONLY players to predict a final between Spain and Germany with Spain as the winner! But no player predicted a 1-0 scoreline. Nobody thought of David Villa as topscorer either...
Here are the final top 10:
#1 Elijah Callicott-Simmons (Liverpool fan) 25 points
#2 Jim Cleavenger (Liverpool fan) 20
#3 Muayad Marhoun (Barcelona fan) 15
#4 Evan Wickersham (Brighton fan) 12
#5 Tamas Golya (Milan fan) 9 (2nd tiebreaker: 5 goals for topscorer)
#6 Nate Roter (Lyon fan) 9 (2nd tiebreaker: 8 goals)
#7 Mohamed Jemmali (Marseille fan) 8 (2nd tiebreaker: 5 goals)
#8 Collin Wise (Werder Bremen fan) 8 (2nd tiebreaker: 10)
#9 Callie Tift (Newcastle fan) 7
#10 Mattia Marangon (? fan) 6
Was there ever better proof that Liverpool fans know their soccer?
Congratulations to our jersey winners Elijah & Jim, and thanks for playing, everybody! - Tamas

English Premier League season starts

Taylor’s 1 Drink Minimum Policy:
In order to watch games at Taylor’s you must purchase at least 1 drink (a Coke costs less than $2). This may seem obvious to most of you, but our arrangement with Taylor’s is this: Taylor’s purchases 6 soccer channels including Setanta, GolTV, and FSC, which cost them hundreds of dollars a month in exchange for some added business.  Yet, some people have been showing up just to watch the games and don’t buy anything.  The only alternative is to charge a flat fee at the door, which we want to avoid.  Thank you for your understanding.

Website and Leaders:
We are looking for someone to take over as the “webmiester” for next year, starting in the summer, as our man is most likely moving to Ashland.  Best case scenario is that you have a Mac, but any experience is fine.  We are also looking for more people to help run the club next year and get us to the “next level” for our 500+ member club.  If interested in either, email jcleaven@uoregon.edu

Taylor’s Bar Information:
** Under-21’s are OK until 4pm.  Game times are subject to change, especially for delayed showings, so check the channel websites for updates/changes.  Taylor’s will be open as early as 7am on some weekends, so we’ll be able to see more live games at that time.  And keep in mind that there are replays of most of these matches and a LOT of additional matches not listed above, so if you miss the live showing with the club or want to see something else, just check out channel websites to find the game times and stop by Taylor’s and just ask them to turn it on.  Just make sure to buy at least something and mention that you are part of the club so they’ll know that we’re doing our part to make this partnership work.  Taylor’s is located at 894 E 13th Ave. in Eugene.

Soccer is Real Futbol Announcement for Sunday and Leadership Search:
As the Premier League season winds down, I think it is important our club provides members with all the best LIVE games, so I will be showing both the Manchester United v. Arsenal match and the Liverpool v. Blackburn games live at my house this Sunday.  The Man U v. Arsenal match should be pretty exciting and crucial for Man U’s title hopes, so although the 2nd half will be on at Taylor’s starting at 9am, I will show it from the start at 8am.  But come early at 7:45am to grab a full proper English “fry-up” breakfast (eggs, beans, toast, sausages, mushrooms, stewed tomatoes, HP Sauce, Coleman’s Mustard, Nutella, tea, coffee, juice, etc.).  Cost is $5, regardless of whether or not you watch both games or don’t eat, so you might as well!!  And come even earlier, at 5:30am if you want to watch the Liverpool v. Blackburn game too!  OK, to recap:
Sunday 13 April at Jim’s House, 2675 Cresta De Ruta, $5:
*5:30am – Liverpool v. Blackburn (Live at Jim’s)
*7:45am – Proper English “Fry-Up” Breakfast
*8am – Arsenal v. Manchester United (Live at Jim’s)
*Jim’s house is located at 2675 Cresta De Ruta St., Eugene, OR (mapquest it or see the map on our website).  Park on the West side of the street and walk up the steep driveway, we’ll be around back in the guest/soccer house.  If you get lost, call 503-990-9368.

The Club Needs Your Help!!!:
During the matches on Sunday we’ll be discussing the future direction of the club and trying to identify people who would be willing to take over as the leadership team for next year, as myself and some of the other organizers will be graduating this year.  As you may know, we are an ASUO Club at the University of Oregon and will be receiving university funding for special events such as viewing the FA Cup Final on May 17th.
*In addition to our discussion on Sunday, we will also be meeting tomorrow night (Friday) at 9pm at my house to put together our funding proposal for next week and anyone who is interested in attending and/or becoming a leader for next year should PLEASE email me even if you cannot make it so I can put you on the list of interested people.

1/31/08: Team looking for 2 more indoor soccer players:
We have 6 guys, most with high school experience but none in great shape. We only need 2 or 3 more to have a full team. Games start second week in feb. It's indoor with full walls and no out of bounds so it's fast paced but not insanely competitive. The cost would be somewhere around $50/ea plus a $15 membership fee that is good for a year. I hope some peeps out there are feeling nostalgic for the glory days of high school soccer - re-live your youth and meet some cool guys. Contact Jeff Ballard @ 512-751-6875 or email jballard210@yahoo.com

Playing Opportunities:
Want to PLAY some soccer? Here are some opportunities…………

University of Oregon MEN’S Club Soccer Team (students only). As the U of O does NOT have an men’s NCAA team, this is the best team at the university and they travel to play other university teams. Info:

U of O Women’s NCAA Soccer:
The women’s soccer program is pretty incredible these days and there are many reasons to watch them play, the number one reason being that it is quality futbol. Their fall schedule is:

Portland Timbers:
The Portland Timbers are the only professional team in Oregon. They are fun to watch because they really do have “atmosphere” (songs, chants, etc.) due to the fans, the “Timbers Army.” They are in the playoffs, and should have a few more games. Website:
www.portlandtimbers.com

Champions League:
Here are the group draws for the 1st round that start 18 September:

High School Games:
The Oregon high school season is kicking off and there is a lot of great live soccer to watch if you are so inclined. For instance on Monday Sept. 10th Jesuit is playing at South Eugene HS (400 East 19th) at 6pm, both of which are among the top teams in the state.
